CORK Organizers Announce Cancellation of 2020 Edition

Concerns With Timing



Today, CORK organizers announced in a press release that they would not be hosting the 51st edition of the regatta, citing concerns over the timing of the event around the return to school. Although many in the community desire a return to racing, organizers reached the conclusion that it was not in their best interest to host a large event around the time that children would be returning to school in some fashion. CORK Fall Regatta Decision

Over the past month, the CORK team has been carefully monitoring the COVID 19 situation and working on the question of whether The CORK Fall Regatta could be held this September.  A plan was developed that could comply with the COVID-19 rules and it was clear that there was a strong desire among sailors and coaches to see racing resume.  However, the CORK Board of Directors had to balance that against the continuing uncertainty of how the virus is developing and the fact that a September regatta would occur just as students had returned to school with the mixing and uncertainty involved.  Those students would then convene in Kingston as regatta sailors.  The risks outweighed the other factors for the Board, and as a result, it has been decided not to host Fall CORK this year.  It is regrettable that the pandemic has forced such a decision, but much as we would all like to be back racing, the safety of all involved remains the key element.

The CORK team has the planning for the 2021 regatta season already underway with the hope that we will host our usual events in July, August and September.

What Should Be In Your Dock Box/Ditty Bag

 Although the Optimist class is comprised of children, the fact of the matter is that serious racing happens in the Optimist class and that carries with it needs for equipment and replacement parts. Any sailor or coach worth their salt will tell you that you need a ditty bag or tackle box to carry spare parts and tools in order to keep your Opti up or in case of technicals - breakage - out on the race course.  The historical example of a ditty bag, complete with marlinspike So what should you keep in your ditty bag? At the bare minimum, your ditty bag needs to have tools to repair or adjust parts of your boat.
